BIOMAPS
Bio-Intelligent Manufacturing of Multifunctional Bio-Based Polymer systems
Objectives
The main objective of the BIOMAPS project is to develop advanced manufacturing technologies, powered by artificial intelligence, to produce new vitrimerized PHA-based materials. These bio-based materials are designed to replace non-sustainable petrochemical plastics in selected applications, combining recyclability, durability, advanced functionalities, and high performance.
Description
BIOMAPS addresses one of the key challenges of our time: designing and producing safe and sustainable materials in the context of diminishing natural resources. The project focuses on developing a fully circular value chain for bio-manufactured plastics, specifically polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) modified through vitrimerization. This transformation enhances their industrial processability, enables features such as self-healing and thermal-mechanical stability, and retains their biodegradability. By integrating digital tools, advanced modelling, and artificial intelligence, BIOMAPS aims to optimize manufacturing processes and support the adoption of these materials across key industrial sectors. The strategy is to introduce low-volume, high-value solutions first—establishing circular material loops—before scaling up to higher-volume applications, contributing to European leadership in sustainable technologies.
