SDG

AIMPLAS is aligned in this project with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Objectives

To extend the life of packaged products and develop more sustainable packaging by developing oxygen barrier solutions that replace EVOH with multilayer structures.

Description

EVOH has a high oxygen barrier in low-humidity conditions. However, since it is very sensitive to humidity, permeability values become intermediate in high humidity conditions (>80 %), thus limiting the implementation of EVOH as a barrier material in food, which requires very humid environments for food conservation. COAT4PACK develops coatings based on hybrid PVOH polymers with metal oxides and primer solutions/PVOH as these are less sensitive to humidity, with OTR values being lower than 1 cc/m2/24h in low and high humidity conditions. The new solution is suitable for food contact and can be applied in the printing and lamination of flexible structures, thus avoiding the coextruded structure manufacturing process.
