Objectives

The main objective of this project is to demonstrate the viability of Polylactic Acid (PLA) synthesis from waste products in the bakery industry and its use in the manufacture of 100% biodegradable packaging for bakery products (closing the life cycle).

Description

Lactic acid has been obtained through enzymatic fermentation of waste bread crusts and sponge cake trims. This lactic acid has been polymerised into poly(lactic acid) (PLA) for the production of biodegradable plastic bags and trays for different bakery and pastry products. The new packages comply with the strict technical and safety requirements of the food industry, and also provide a double environmental benefit: the recovery of industrial waste and biodegradability of the package.
