Objectives:

The main objective of this Project is to demonstrate the viability of Polylactic Acid (PLA) synthesis from waste products of the bakery industry and its use in the fabrication of a 100% biodegradable packaging of bakery products (closing the life cycle).

Description:

Lactic acid has been obtained through enzymatic fermentation of bread crusts and sponge cake trims waste. This lactic acid has been polymerized into poly(lactic acid) (PLA) for the production of biodegradable plastic packaging, specifically bags and trays, for the packaging of different bakery and pastry products. The new packages fulfill the severe technical and safety requirements for the food industry, and at te same time, they provide a double environmental benefit: industrial waste valorization and biodegradability of the package.
