SMILE CITY
Sustainable Materials for Innovative, Low Emissions applications in the CIrcular ciTY
Objectives
The main objective of SMILE CITY is to develop and implement realistic circular systemic solutions that drive the transition towards carbon-neutral, sustainable, toxin-free and fully circular cities by 2050. To achieve this, the project focuses on replacing virgin materials with recycled materials and promoting sustainable mobility through urban infrastructure made from recycled urban waste (construction materials, end-of-life tyres and electric vehicle batteries).
Description
SMILE CITY is a European initiative that integrates innovative circular solutions into the urban environment with the aim of reducing CO₂ emissions, increasing sustainability and improving resource efficiency. The project plans to install up to 100 km of cycle lanes and 20 charging stations for electric bicycles, all made from recycled materials sourced from urban waste such as concrete, end-of-life tyres and electric vehicle batteries.
Notable innovations include charging stations built with prefabricated recycled concrete elements and photovoltaic panels also made from recycled materials, as well as street furniture and road safety elements made from recycled rubber, including bollards, lane dividers and rubber asphalt. These solutions not only reduce environmental impact but also improve safety and promote sustainable mobility.
The project will be implemented in seven European and non-European countries, promoting interregional and cross-border cooperation. In addition, SMILE CITY contributes to strengthening Europe's strategic autonomy by improving resource efficiency and reducing the environmental footprint associated with current recycling techniques.
