Objectives

To demonstrate the environmental, social and economic benefits of a biodegradable food packaging material which has a lower environmental impact than current petrol-based food packaging materials thanks to the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Description

The biodegradable food packaging material selected is Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) that will be obtained from a cheese industry by-product (whey); PHB will be produced by microbial fermentation.

The project has been co-funded by the IVACE ACTION PLAN 2017, a programme supported by the Valencian Regional Government’s Ministry of Sustainable Economy, Productive Sectors, Trade and Employment through the Valencian Institute of Business Competitiveness (IVACE).
