Objectives

The aim is to create multilayer and monolayer plastic bottles and bags to package dairy products which then do not have to be separated from the rest of the organic waste at the end of their brief shelf life.

Description

The development of a biodegradable material for the manufacture of big multilayer bottles and bags, such as the ones used for milk or milkshakes, as well as smaller monolayer bottles used to package probiotic dairy products.

One of the main difficulties the researchers of this project are facing is obtaining a biodegradable material which has the same functions and properties as traditional packaging, including resistance to thermal treatments such as sterilisation and pasteurisation. To achieve this, current commercial biodegradable materials will be modified through reactive extrusion to overcome their thermal limitations.
