To develop sustainable, high-performance foam plastic packages for safer food packaging.
This project tackles the development of foam packages for pre-cooked food products (fresh-cut produce and pre-cooked vegetables) requiring microwave heat resistance, with two very different plastic materials: 1) Foam PP packages, a material with a softening temperature that withstands retort conditions (120ºC 30 min) thanks to physical modifications of the material by combining it with other materials or additives to optimise its physical foaming. 2) Sustainable foam packages obtained from biodegradable and compostable materials by chemical modifications of the material to improve its thermal resistance and foaming, resulting in the decrease of the amount of raw material used per package, and therefore reducing costs.
