Objectives

To develop a new curing process for polyester resins, processed by infusion, based on microwave technology.

Description

Microwaves with a frequency of 2.45GHz ensure volumetric heating of the resin and overcome the poor thermal conductivity of the polymer. Microwave curing manages to separate the filling process with resin, and the curing process is performed. The advantages are that curing is not dependent on boundary conditions like outside temperature humidity and therefore it is easier to replicate and to control; homogenous curing of thick parts; faster and quicker curing; increased cross-linking, reduction of waste and environmental pollution; lower viscosity resin leading to higher fibre content. Social benefits involve fewer VOC (volatile organic components) emissions and a drastic decrease in the content of hazardous peroxides.
