ECOBIONET

Industrial implementation of biodegradable and compostable packaging nets for agricultural and shellfish products

Objectives:

The main objective of this project has been to industrialise the manufacturing process of different types of biodegradable-compostable nets, obtained by the Extrusion Melt Spinning process for agricultural (citrus fruit, potatoes, onions) and shellfish packaging.

Description:

The main output of the ECOBIONET project has been production industrialisation of four different biodegradable packaging nets: oriented and non-oriented nets of two or three filaments in combination with plastic sheets, in a conventional one-step extrusion process using the biodegradable compounds developed in a previous project as a base material.

Besides maintaining all of the properties of conventional nets, this new biodegradable packaging is also compostable. This means that after six months in industrial compostability conditions it serves as fertiliser for plants, therefore returning to the product growing cycle.
