ARPA-ACUA
Eco-friendly alternatives for polymers and their chemical additives in aquatic environments
Objectives
The selection of eco-friendly alternatives in terms of the chemical composition of polymers that diminish the environmental impact of these materials and minimise their potential harmful effects for the environment and for health.
Description
Evaluation of the chemical behaviour, including the detection of ecotoxicological leachates, of directed analytes of polymeric materials, made ad hoc. The project combines ecotoxicology, environmental chemistry and materials science using the three subjects in each of the experimental tasks. It has the double aim of firstly, selecting additives with plasticising and flame-retardant properties, UV filters and antimicrobial agents that are useful for the industry and also have a low impact on the aquatic environment according to ecotoxicological tests with sensitive marine organisms and, secondly, carrying out an ex ante evaluation of the environmental risk of alternative bioplastics with lower persistence and toxicity.
