Plastic recycling is a key industry for a smooth transition towards the circular economy, not just for the environment, but also for the economy and to achieve the goals set by Europe. It is essential to continue working on optimizing the management and recovery of plastic waste, developing new applications and improving recycling processes.
According to the last report of the Spanish association Cicloplast, 2,151 kt of plastic wastes or scrap are generated in Spain annually.
AIMPLAS, together with AIDIMME, ARVET, ACTECO and ENPLAST, coordinates the project LIFE EXTRUCLEAN. Thanks to new decontamination technologies, it has been achieved to eliminate 70% more contaminant substances than with the conventional process.
In the coming months, the project will be scaled at industrial level and the use of the material obtained in the manufacture of new packages will be validated.
The project, coordinated by the University of Cantabria and wherein AIMPLAS has taken part, received the LIFE Citizens’ Award for the best 2015 LIFE Environment project, during EU Green Week in Brussels, where BREAD4PLA, coordinated by AIMPLAS, was also awarded.
AIMPLAS coordinates the European project URBANREC to improve logistics and treatment of waste, such as furniture, mattresses, upholstery, textiles and plastic garden products by menas of innovative separating techniques.
Funded within the programme EEA GRANTS through CDTI, the project EPS-FISH makes possible to remove odours in fresh fish packages for their recycling and recovery.
